Heidi’s Story
I’m Heidi and I own Path to Mending. I feel like I’ve experienced a little bit of everything in my life. I’m a military brat, so I moved around a lot growing up. Out of high school, I worked as a Nurse Aide for a few years in Nursing homes and hospitals and became certified as an EMT. Honestly, some of the most challenging work I have ever done.
Then I joined the Air Force, was assigned to DLI where I learned Pashto after Basic Training and served a linguist for four years (we affectionately called ourselves “Pash-lings”). After my enlistment, I deployed as an Interpreter for almost three years and worked with some of the most talented individuals, American and Afghan, on this planet. To include the man I would marry, I met when I was assigned to an Army Intelligence team in Ghazni. By far, the best part of my deployment.
In 2013, I returned stateside and began the educational journey to becoming a Counselor. First, completing my undergraduate at Geroge Fox in Portland, OR (Northwesterner, here!) and then my graduate degree at Xavier (Go, Musketeers!). And then opened my Private practice during the start of COVID.
In the midst of all that, I also got married, had two beautiful babies, published a book, and said goodbye to at least a few loved one and friends. Then, after the birth of my son, I began having symptoms that were scary and, it was clear that my doctors were not entirely sure what was going on either. A friend, and fellow clinician on the West coast recommended psychedelics and it was perhaps one of the most clarifying experiences of my life. I learned my body and spirit had been calling to me. I could not continue to avoid traumatic events of the past and, so, I stopped running and surrendered.
I was so moved by the capacity and research behind psychedelics that I enrolled at Integrative Psychiatric Institute and became certified as a Psychedelic Assisted Therapist. As part of this, I was honored to learn from some of the giants in the research community and to meet fellow clinicians passionate about helping survivors of trauma.
I guess that brings us to now. Path to Mending is my practice. I specialize in working with complex trauma, LOVE Internal Family Systems and my own workbook: House Visualization Technique. I think music is a hugely powerful healing force. I like to talk in pictures and stories and I find that it helps many people. And I’m human which is always growing and sometimes failing. I believe we each have a unique purpose and gift to offer the world. And, though I’m not native to Cincinnati, since I moved here, I have fallen in love with it.
I hope it’s been helpful to learn a little bit about me. I look forward to learning about your story also and what parts are ready to be seen and healed.
